Academy Classes
The Dublin Irish Festival Academy is designed to introduce students to the arts, culture, dance and music of Ireland. Whether you want to learn to dance a jig or play the Irish fiddle, the classes will get you ready for the 2008 Dublin Irish Festival. All classes are for ages 13 and up and will take place at the Dublin Community Recreation Center.

| Intermediate Irish Fiddle |

This class is for those who already have some experience playing Irish fiddle, know enough tunes to play occasionally in a session and want to increase their repertoire, learn more about the style and ornamentation, and how to play by ear. Dan Stacey, from Stratford, Ontario, was a winner of many prizes for both fiddle and dance from a young age he is a former member of Seven Nations and is currently appearing with the Ottawa Valley step dance troupe, the Stepcrew.

| Advanced Irish Fiddle |

This class is for the advanced Irish fiddler who wants to polish their performance and session skills. Regular session playing and ability to play at “dance tempo” are strongly recommended. Kevin Burke was born in London to parents from County Sligo. A member of the Bothy Band, Patrick Street and Celtic Fiddle Festival, he was a 2002 winner of a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

This class is for whistle and flute players who already know their way around the instrument, and want to learn more repertoire, traditional ornamentation, articulation and style. Grey Larsen is well-known as one of the world's foremost players and exponents of the Irish flute. To many musicians and music lovers, his recordings are classics.

Have you ever wondered how to play the bohdran, the Irish drum? Michael Vignoles from Galway, Ireland teaches this traditional heartbeat of all Irish music. He provides drums for students to play. Michael is also known internationally as an instrument maker. For more than 20 years, he has made bodhrans and uilleann pipes from his Galway City shop.

Irish, one of the Gaelic languages, is experiencing a renaissance both in the U.S. and in Ireland. This is your chance to learn some of the basics including complex pronunciation and traditional sayings. Raghn Crow was the founding president of the Gaelic League of Central Ohio and is well-known in the United States and Ireland as an author and teacher of the Irish language. Although Raghn calls Irish “an ancient language in a modern time,” he insists that once students know the “code,” they can apply those rules to the language and progress quickly in their proficiency.

| Country Set Dancing |

This class focuses on both the basics and finer points of country set dances, introduces some newly revived or created dances, and gives you a chance to further develop your steps. This interactive class gets you up and moving. Singles and doubles are welcome. Students should wear comfortable thin leather soled shoes and loose light clothing. Jim Keenan, native of County Armagh, Ireland, teaches country set dancing in both the US and Europe. Through his research and teaching he has helped revive traditional sets as well as receiving commissions for original choreography.

Cara Butler's expertise lies in her formal Irish dance training but is not limited by it. She is a performer at heart and her various talents have enabled her to excel in many mediums. She has toured with Ashley MacIsaac and the Chieftains showcasing her virtuosity as a singer and dancer. This class is for the advanced guitarist who wants to polish their performance and session skills. Players should have a strong sense of rhythm and harmony, be able to play both tunes and accompaniment, and be at least familiar with DADGAD and other tunings. Ged Foley exhibits both driving energy and great delicacy in guitar playing and is a true multi-instrumentalist and is an acknowledged master of the guitar. His career spans The Battlefield Band, Jez Lowe, The House Band, Patrick Street, Celtic Fiddle Festival and more. Ged has also turned his considerable talents to record production, with excellent results

This class is for the advanced banjo player who wants to polish their performance and session skills. John Carty developed his love for fiddle, banjo, and flute, all of which he has mastered, through his multi-instrumentalist father who was a member of the Glenside Ceili Band in London in the 1960’s. John is a member of the band Patrick Street
